ପିନ୍ଧିବାକୁ ଗହଣା, ସଞ୍ଚୟ ପାଇଁ ETF — ଦୁହିଁଙ୍କର ନିଜ ଜାଗା।Jewellery to wear, an ETF to save — each has its place.
Of ₹1,00,000 spent on jewellery, about ₹86,685 buys gold.
The other ₹13,315 goes on making charges and 3% GST. After 5 years, on the same gold price, the ETF route ends about ₹22,296 ahead.
These figures are estimates from the numbers you enter. Returns are not promised, and tax is left out unless stated. This is education, not investment advice.
How this is worked out
When you buy jewellery, the price covers three things: the gold, the making charges, and 3% GST on both. So gold value = amount ÷ (1 + making %) ÷ 1.03.
A gold ETF puts nearly the whole amount into gold, then takes a small yearly cost (the expense ratio). Both routes then follow the same gold price you entered. When you sell jewellery, most shops keep back a deduction; that comes off at the end.
What this leaves out
- Tax. Gold ETFs held over 12 months, and jewellery held over 24 months, are taxed at 12.5% on the gain (2026 rules).
- Brokerage and the demat account an ETF needs. A gold mutual fund avoids demat but has its own cost.
- What jewellery gives that an ETF cannot: wearing it, gifting it, tradition. That has value too — this only shows the money side.
